Name Meaning

Posted by tkbran on 29/07/2010
Hi

I am just wondering if anyone can help me find out the meaning of my first and middle names?
I was named after my great great great grandmother but unfortunately my parents can not quite remember what it means. They think its something about "bird on a wing" or to that effect????

My first names Te Kira and middle name Marukai

My marae where this side of my family come from is Taumaranui.

Thanks
Te Kira

Kia ora tkbran,

You have a beautiful name :). Maybe trace back your whānau; ask your whānau kaumatua/kuia whether they remember stories told to them of your ggggrandmother and the meanings of your name, or, go back to your marae whenever you can and ask around. Although the answers you can get from forum are excellent, sometimes the answers are best sought via whānau first. That way, at least if if all else fails, forum can be an alternative avenue to finding the meaning behind your name.

Just a thought. Goodluck in your search Te Kira

Nāku noa,

Kia ora tirei browne,

Read what I wrote for Te Kira above .. the same will apply for you also. If you're not sure of where your roots are maybe some of your whanau in New Zealand can help guide you in the right direction.

As for your sons name .. there were many Tāmati that came over with the Fleets .. however, I think prior to European contact, the name Tāmati didn't actually mean Thomas. It was a transliteration .. a name easily translated so as to make it easier for non Māori to pronounce and remember. Also, back then I think most ingoa tawhito (names of old) were in parts .. so the name Tāmati could have been part of a longer name .. though don't quote me on that .. it's best to try get in contact with your whānau .. come home and reconnect, you know?

Just a thought; hope it helps even a little,

Nāku noa,

P.S. @ Te Kira: you're welcome :)
